Conference Announcement: Deltas in Times of Climate Change II, 24-26 September 2014

Where rivers flow into the sea, where lowlands encounter bays and oceans, people have settled since times immemorial. The land is fertile and easy to work; it is easy to transport people and goods over long distances. Living in deltas brings many advantages. But the coin has another side: dangers from flooding and from salt intrusion in times of drought. Climate change worsens these threats and intensive use makes deltas more vulnerable to them.

The first 'Deltas in Times of Climate Change’ conference was held in 2010, drawing about 1200 participants from all over the world. Since then awareness has risen about the urgency and importance of cooperation among deltas to act. As more knowledge is gained, climate adaptation strategies have been developed and measures taken. Yet a great deal remains to be done. How can risk analysis be improved? Which measures are most effective? How should they be best financed and implemented? Which stakeholders should be involved? These topics and many more will be discussed in a lively setting during the conference in 2014, Deltas in Times of Climate Change II.
